A Banquet and a Bad Plan

Name Date

Read the Story

On the third day, Esther put on her royal clothes. She stood in the inner court of the king's house. The king saw her, and she pleased him. He held out the gold scepter. Esther came near and touched the top of it.

The king asked Esther what she wanted. He said he would give her up to half of his kingdom. Esther asked the king and Haman to come to a feast she had made. At the feast the king asked again. Esther asked them to come to another feast the next day. Then she would tell him.

Haman went out full of joy. But at the gate, Mordecai did not stand up or move for him. Haman was full of anger. At home he bragged about his riches. But he said none of it made him happy while Mordecai sat at the gate. Haman then made an evil plan against Mordecai. Esther was waiting. Christians believe God was at work.

Favor and Pride

Name Date

Read and Think

On the third day of the fast, Esther put on her royal clothing. She stood in the inner court across from the king's house. When the king saw her, she obtained favor in his sight. He held out the golden scepter. Esther came near and touched the top of it.

The king offered her up to half of the kingdom. Esther asked only that the king and Haman come to a banquet. There the king asked again what she wanted. She asked them to come to a second banquet the next day. Then she would answer. Esther did not rush. She waited for the right time.

Haman left joyful and glad of heart. But Mordecai did not stand up or move for him at the gate. Haman controlled himself and went home. He boasted of his riches, his children, and his honor. He said all of it was worth nothing while he saw Mordecai at the gate. His wife and friends gave him a cruel plan, and he liked it. Pride made Haman unhappy even with everything he had.

Courage and Contentment

Name Date

Read and Think

On the third day, after fasting, Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the inner court of the king's house. Her life was in the king's hands. When he saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she obtained favor in his sight, and he held out the golden scepter. Esther drew near and touched its top. Christians see in the quiet favor of a pagan king the unseen hand of God.

The king's question was generous. He asked what she would like and what her request was, and said it would be given her even to the half of the kingdom. Esther invited the king and Haman to a banquet. At the banquet of wine, she asked them to come again the next day. Her patience built suspense. Christians see God's timing at work here.

Haman went out joyful and glad of heart. But when he saw Mordecai in the king's gate, who neither stood up nor moved for him, he was filled with wrath. At home he recounted his riches, the multitude of his children, and his promotion. Yet he said all this was worth nothing to him while Mordecai sat at the gate. Zeresh and his friends proposed a gallows fifty cubits high, and Haman had it made. Haman's discontent shows how pride poisons every blessing.

  2. What do Christians see in the king's favor?

  3. What did the king promise Esther?

  4. What three things did Haman recount at home?

Think About It

  1. Esther's patience gave room for God's timing. When have you seen that waiting was wiser than rushing?

  2. Haman's pride ruined his joy. In the New Testament, Paul says he learned to be content in any circumstance (Philippians 4:11). How can you learn contentment?
