Esther 5 · Grade 4
Favor and Pride
Read and Think
On the third day of the fast, Esther put on her royal clothing. She stood in the inner court across from the king's house. When the king saw her, she obtained favor in his sight. He held out the golden scepter. Esther came near and touched the top of it.
The king offered her up to half of the kingdom. Esther asked only that the king and Haman come to a banquet. There the king asked again what she wanted. She asked them to come to a second banquet the next day. Then she would answer. Esther did not rush. She waited for the right time.
Haman left joyful and glad of heart. But Mordecai did not stand up or move for him at the gate. Haman controlled himself and went home. He boasted of his riches, his children, and his honor. He said all of it was worth nothing while he saw Mordecai at the gate. His wife and friends gave him a cruel plan, and he liked it. Pride made Haman unhappy even with everything he had.
