Haman's Anger

Name Date

Read the Story

The king promoted a man named Haman. He set Haman above all the princes. All the king's servants at the gate bowed to Haman. But Mordecai did not bow. The servants asked him why he broke the king's rule. Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew.

When Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow, he was full of anger. He did not want to punish only Mordecai. He made a wicked plan to hurt all the Jews in the kingdom. They cast lots, called Pur, to pick a day. The lot fell on the month of Adar.

Haman told the king that some people kept their own laws. He offered the king silver. The king gave Haman his ring. Haman sent letters to every land. The king and Haman sat down to drink. But the people of Susa were upset. God's people were in danger. Christians believe God had already put Esther in the palace.

A Plot Against God's People

Name Date

Read and Think

After these things, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite. He set his seat above all the princes. The king commanded that everyone at the king's gate bow to Haman. Mordecai did not bow or do him reverence. Day after day the servants spoke to him, but he would not listen. He had told them he was a Jew.

When Haman saw this, he was full of wrath. It seemed too small to strike only at Mordecai. So Haman sought to destroy all the Jews in the whole kingdom. In the first month, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman. The lot fell on the twelfth month, the month Adar.

Haman told the king about a people scattered through his kingdom. He said their laws were different and they did not keep the king's laws. He offered ten thousand talents of silver. The king took off his ring and gave it to Haman. Letters went to every province. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was perplexed. Yet Christians believe the lot was not the final word, because God rules over all things.

Pride and the Lot

Name Date

Read and Think

King Ahasuerus advanced Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and set his seat above all the princes. Every servant at the king's gate bowed to him, as the king had commanded. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay him homage. When the servants asked why he transgressed the king's commandment, Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew.

Haman was full of wrath. He scorned to lay hands on Mordecai alone and sought instead to destroy all the Jews throughout the whole kingdom. Pur, that is, the lot, was cast before Haman from day to day and month to month. It fell on the twelfth month, Adar. Haman then described the Jews to the king as a people scattered abroad whose laws differ from all other peoples. He offered ten thousand talents of silver for the king's treasuries.

The king handed over his signet ring and gave Haman authority over the people. Letters were sealed and sent by couriers into every province, naming the thirteenth day of Adar as the day of destruction. Then the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was perplexed. The contrast is striking: rulers at ease while ordinary people tremble. Proverbs 16:33 says the lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from Yahweh. Haman trusted chance, but Christians believe the Lord ruled over the outcome.
