A Plot Against God's People

Name Date

Read and Think

After these things, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite. He set his seat above all the princes. The king commanded that everyone at the king's gate bow to Haman. Mordecai did not bow or do him reverence. Day after day the servants spoke to him, but he would not listen. He had told them he was a Jew.

When Haman saw this, he was full of wrath. It seemed too small to strike only at Mordecai. So Haman sought to destroy all the Jews in the whole kingdom. In the first month, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman. The lot fell on the twelfth month, the month Adar.

Haman told the king about a people scattered through his kingdom. He said their laws were different and they did not keep the king's laws. He offered ten thousand talents of silver. The king took off his ring and gave it to Haman. Letters went to every province. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was perplexed. Yet Christians believe the lot was not the final word, because God rules over all things.
