Read the Story

The king's servants said he should find a new queen. So young women were brought to the palace in Susa. Mordecai was a Jew who lived in Susa. He had raised his cousin Esther as his own daughter, because her father and mother had died.

Esther was taken to the palace. Hegai, who was in charge, was kind to her. Mordecai told Esther not to tell anyone she was a Jew. Every day he walked near the court to see how she was. When it was Esther's turn to see the king, she asked only for what Hegai said. All who saw her liked her.

The king loved Esther more than all the others. He set the royal crown on her head and made her queen. Later, Mordecai learned that two men planned to harm the king. He told Esther, and Esther told the king. The men were punished. It was all written in the king's book.

A Queen from the Exiles

Name Date

Read and Think

After his anger cooled, the king remembered Vashti. His servants said young women should be gathered to Susa. The one who pleased the king would be queen. In Susa lived Mordecai, a Jew from the tribe of Benjamin. His family had been carried away from Jerusalem. He had raised his cousin Hadassah, also called Esther, as his own daughter.

Esther was taken to the palace under the care of Hegai. She pleased him, and he gave her the best place. Mordecai told her not to make known her people. Every day he walked before the court to learn how she was. When her turn came, she asked for nothing except what Hegai advised. She obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her.

The king loved Esther more than all the women. He set the royal crown on her head and made her queen. Later, Mordecai learned that two doorkeepers planned to harm the king. He told Esther, and she told the king in Mordecai's name. The plot was stopped, and it was written in the book of the chronicles. That small record would matter later.

Esther 2 · Grade 5

An Orphan in the Palace

Name Date

Read and Think

When the king's wrath cooled, his servants proposed a search for a new queen. Young women were gathered to Susa under the custody of Hegai. Into this pagan court the writer introduces Mordecai the Jew, a Benjamite descended from exiles carried from Jerusalem with Jeconiah. He had raised his cousin Hadassah, that is, Esther, taking her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.

Esther obtained kindness from Hegai, who quickly gave her what she needed and the best place in the women's house. At Mordecai's instruction she did not make known her people or her relatives. Each day Mordecai walked before the court to learn how Esther did. When her turn came, she required nothing but what Hegai advised. Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who looked at her.

The king loved Esther more than all the women and set the royal crown on her head. A great feast, Esther's feast, followed. Then, almost as an afterthought, the chapter records that Mordecai, sitting in the king's gate, learned of a plot by two doorkeepers against the king. He told Queen Esther, and Esther informed the king in Mordecai's name. The two men were punished, and the matter was written in the book of the chronicles. Christians see the hand of God's providence in each detail, placing Esther and Mordecai where they would be needed.
