Esther 2 · Grade 4
A Queen from the Exiles
Read and Think
After his anger cooled, the king remembered Vashti. His servants said young women should be gathered to Susa. The one who pleased the king would be queen. In Susa lived Mordecai, a Jew from the tribe of Benjamin. His family had been carried away from Jerusalem. He had raised his cousin Hadassah, also called Esther, as his own daughter.
Esther was taken to the palace under the care of Hegai. She pleased him, and he gave her the best place. Mordecai told her not to make known her people. Every day he walked before the court to learn how she was. When her turn came, she asked for nothing except what Hegai advised. She obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her.
The king loved Esther more than all the women. He set the royal crown on her head and made her queen. Later, Mordecai learned that two doorkeepers planned to harm the king. He told Esther, and she told the king in Mordecai's name. The plot was stopped, and it was written in the book of the chronicles. That small record would matter later.
