That book also tells how great Mordecai became. The king raised him up. Mordecai was second only to the king. He was great among the Jews. Many of his people loved him.

Mordecai used his power well. He sought the good of his people. He spoke peace to all of them. The story that began with danger ends with peace. Christians believe God kept His promise to care for His people.

A Leader Who Served

Name Date

Read and Think

King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land and on the islands of the sea. His acts of power and might are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia. The king who once signed Haman's decree now ruled with Mordecai at his side.

The full account of Mordecai's greatness is recorded there too. Mordecai the Jew was next to King Ahasuerus. He was great among the Jews. He was accepted by the multitude of his brothers.

Mordecai did not use power for himself. He sought the good of his people and spoke peace to all his descendants. Haman sought his own glory and fell. Mordecai sought his people's good and was honored. The book ends with peace. Christians see God's faithfulness here, even when He is unseen.

Greatness in Service

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Esther closes briefly. King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land and on the islands of the sea. All the acts of his power and of his might are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia. The empire continued, but the writer's focus is elsewhere.

The same chronicles record the full account of the greatness of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him. Mordecai the Jew was next to King Ahasuerus. He was great among the Jews and accepted by the multitude of his brothers. The exile who once sat at the king's gate now stood beside the throne.

Mordecai's greatness is described by service: seeking the good of his people, and speaking peace to all his descendants. Haman sought honor and was brought low. Mordecai sought others' good and was lifted up. Though God's name never appears, Christians read the whole book as a witness to His faithful care. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant (Mark 10:43).

Show What You Know

  1. Where are the king's acts of power recorded?

  2. How had Mordecai's place changed?

  3. By what is Mordecai's greatness described?

  4. How do Haman's and Mordecai's endings compare?

  5. What did Mordecai speak to all his descendants?
