Esther 10 · Grade 5

Greatness in Service

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Esther closes briefly. King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land and on the islands of the sea. All the acts of his power and of his might are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia. The empire continued, but the writer's focus is elsewhere.

The same chronicles record the full account of the greatness of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him. Mordecai the Jew was next to King Ahasuerus. He was great among the Jews and accepted by the multitude of his brothers. The exile who once sat at the king's gate now stood beside the throne.

Mordecai's greatness is described by service: seeking the good of his people, and speaking peace to all his descendants. Haman sought honor and was brought low. Mordecai sought others' good and was lifted up. Though God's name never appears, Christians read the whole book as a witness to His faithful care. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant (Mark 10:43).
