A Queen Says No

Name Date

Read the Story

Ahasuerus was a great king. He ruled from India to Ethiopia, over 127 lands. He showed off his riches for 180 days. Then he gave a feast for seven days for all the people in Susa. There were white and blue hangings and cups of gold.

Queen Vashti gave a feast for the women in the palace. On the seventh day, the king sent his servants to bring Vashti. He wanted to show everyone how beautiful she was. But Vashti would not come.

The king was very angry. He asked his wise men what to do. Memucan said the king should choose a new queen. The king liked this plan. He sent letters to every land. The book of Esther never says God's name. But Christians believe God was caring for His people all along.

A Proud King's Palace

Name Date

Read and Think

The story of Esther takes place in Persia, after many Jews had returned to Judah. Ahasuerus ruled 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia. In the third year of his reign, he held a great feast for his princes. He displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom for 180 days. Then he held a seven-day feast for all the people in the citadel of Susa.

The palace was hung with white, green, and blue. Couches of gold and silver rested on marble floors. Drinks were served in gold cups, each one different. Meanwhile, Queen Vashti made a feast for the women. On the seventh day, the king's heart was merry with wine. He sent for Vashti to show her beauty to the people. But Queen Vashti refused to come.

The king's anger burned. He asked his wise men what the law said. Memucan warned that other women might follow Vashti's example. So the king decreed that Vashti would never again come before him. Her royal place would go to another. God is not named in this book. Yet Christians see His quiet care as He prepares a place for Esther.

The Stage Is Set

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Esther is set in the Persian Empire during the reign of Ahasuerus, often identified as Xerxes. Many Jews still lived scattered across his 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia. In his third year, Ahasuerus displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty for 180 days. Then he gave a seven-day banquet for everyone in Susa the palace.

The writer lingers on the luxury: white, green, and blue hangings on silver rings and marble pillars, couches of gold and silver, and royal wine in abundance. Queen Vashti also held a feast for the women. On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded seven eunuchs to bring Vashti with the royal crown to show her beauty. Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment.

The mightiest man in the world was humiliated before his guests, and his anger burned. Memucan advised that Vashti's example would spread, so a royal decree went out: Vashti would come no more before the king, and her royal estate would go to another better than she. Letters went to every province that every man should rule his own house. God's name does not appear in Esther, but Christians read it as a story of His hidden providence. Christians believe even a proud king's decision was opening the way for God's purposes.
