Esther 1 · Grade 4

A Proud King's Palace

Name Date

Read and Think

The story of Esther takes place in Persia, after many Jews had returned to Judah. Ahasuerus ruled 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia. In the third year of his reign, he held a great feast for his princes. He displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom for 180 days. Then he held a seven-day feast for all the people in the citadel of Susa.

The palace was hung with white, green, and blue. Couches of gold and silver rested on marble floors. Drinks were served in gold cups, each one different. Meanwhile, Queen Vashti made a feast for the women. On the seventh day, the king's heart was merry with wine. He sent for Vashti to show her beauty to the people. But Queen Vashti refused to come.

The king's anger burned. He asked his wise men what the law said. Memucan warned that other women might follow Vashti's example. So the king decreed that Vashti would never again come before him. Her royal place would go to another. God is not named in this book. Yet Christians see His quiet care as He prepares a place for Esther.

Think About It

  1. The king had great riches but could not control his own anger. What does true strength look like for a follower of God?

  2. God is not named in Esther, yet He was at work. Where might God be quietly working in your life right now?

Memory Verse

“Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.”
