Light and Darkness

Name Date

Read the Story

The Preacher was a rich king. He built houses and planted gardens. He gathered silver and gold. He had everything he wanted.

But when he looked at all his work, he said it was all vanity. Things alone could not make him happy.

He saw that wisdom is better than foolishness, as far as light is better than darkness. He said that the good things we enjoy are from the hand of God. The book ends by saying, Fear God, and keep his commandments (12:13).

Memory Verse

A Rich King's Test

The Preacher tested pleasure. He said, I made myself great works. I built myself houses. I planted myself vineyards. I made myself gardens and parks. I also gathered silver and gold for myself.

Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, … and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind. Riches did not give him lasting joy.

The Test of Pleasure

Name Date

Read and Think

The Preacher decided to test pleasure to see if it would satisfy. I said in my heart, Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure; and behold, this also was vanity. He built houses, planted vineyards, made gardens, parks, and pools of water. He gathered silver and gold for himself, and the treasure of kings.

So I was great, and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind. He also saw that he must leave his work to the man who comes after him, and this grieved him.

Still, he saw a difference: wisdom excels folly, as far as light excels darkness. At the end of the chapter he looks to God. There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy. The book ends by saying, Fear God, and keep his commandments (12:13).

Ecclesiastes 2 · Grade 5

Everything Under the Sun

Name Date

Read and Think

In chapter 2 the Preacher runs an experiment. I said in my heart, Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure. He pursued great projects: I made myself great works. I built myself houses. I planted myself vineyards. I made myself gardens and parks. He gathered silver and gold, singers, servants, and herds. Whatever my eyes desired, I didn't keep from them.

His verdict: Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was no profit under the sun. Then I saw that wisdom excels folly, as far as light excels darkness. Yet he perceived that one event happens to them all; the wise man must die just like the fool. Knowing he must leave his labor to another grieved him deeply.

The chapter turns at verse 24: There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. Enjoyment is not found by grasping, but received as a gift. For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God richly provides us with everything to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17).
