The Preacher

Name Date

Read the Story

Ecclesiastes has the words of the Preacher. He was the son of David and a king in Jerusalem. He wanted to know what life is all about.

He saw that the sun rises and goes down every day. The wind blows south and then north. All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full.

The Preacher said, Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. Vanity means a breath. Many things in life pass away quickly. But God and the earth He made remain. The book ends by saying, Fear God, and keep his commandments (12:13).

Memory Verse

Nothing New

Name Date

Read the Story

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. He said, Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. The Hebrew word for vanity means a breath or vapor. It is here and then gone.

He asked, What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun? One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

There is no new thing under the sun. The Preacher looked for meaning by wisdom, but he found that it was a chasing after wind. The book will show that real meaning is found in God. The book ends by saying, Fear God, and keep his commandments (12:13).

A Breath of Air

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Ecclesiastes begins: The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. The Preacher's theme is stated in verse 2: Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. The Hebrew word means a breath or vapor. Like steam from a cup, life on earth passes quickly.

The Preacher looks at creation. One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever. The sun also rises, and the sun goes down. The wind turns around continually. All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. That which has been is that which shall be, … and there is no new thing under the sun.

The phrase under the sun means life seen only from earth. The Preacher says, I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom. Yet he says, I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind. He shows us that life without God cannot satisfy. The book ends by saying, Fear God, and keep his commandments (12:13).

Ecclesiastes 1 · Grade 5

Chasing After Wind

Name Date

Read and Think

Ecclesiastes opens with the words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Verse 2 sets the theme: Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. The Hebrew word, hebel, means breath or vapor. It describes what is fleeting and cannot be grasped. Verse 3 asks the book's question: What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

Verses 4-11 describe the endless cycles of nature. The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises. The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. There is no new thing under the sun.

In verses 12-18 the Preacher tells of his search. I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. His conclusion: all is vanity and a chasing after wind. For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. The phrase under the sun means life viewed only from earth. The Preacher's sad statements record his search; the book's final answer comes in chapter 12: Fear God and keep his commandments.

  2. What question does verse 3 ask?
