Deuteronomy 9 · Grade 2

Moses Prayed for Them

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses said, God will go ahead of you into the land. But it is not because you are good. You did wrong many times.

At the mountain, the people made a calf out of gold. They prayed to it. Moses came down with two stones. He broke them. The people had broken God's rules.

Then Moses lay down before God for forty days and nights. He begged God not to destroy His people, because God had saved them. He asked God to remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And God listened to Moses.

Memory Verse

I prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, don’t destroy your people and your inheritance that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Deuteronomy 9 · Grade 3

A Prayer for Mercy

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses said God would go before Israel like a consuming fire. But they must not say in their heart that God gave them the land because of their righteousness. It was because of the nations' wickedness and to keep His promise to their fathers.

Moses reminded them that they had been stubborn from Egypt on. At Horeb, while Moses was on the mountain for forty days, they made a golden calf. Moses threw down the two tablets and broke them before their eyes.

Moses lay before God forty days and nights, without bread or water, praying for them. He begged God not to destroy the people He had saved. He asked God to remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God listened. Moses burned the calf and ground it to dust.

Memory Verse

I prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, don’t destroy your people and your inheritance that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Deuteronomy 9 · Grade 4

Not Your Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Moses tells Israel three times that God is not giving them the land because of their righteousness. They were a stiff-necked people. God was driving out the nations for their wickedness and keeping His word to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

To prove the point, Moses retells their rebellion. At Horeb, while God was giving the law, they made a molten calf. Moses broke the tablets before their eyes. They also provoked God at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth Hattaavah, and refused to go up at Kadesh Barnea.

Moses fell down before God forty days and forty nights. He did not argue that the people were good. He appealed to God's own name, His mighty redemption, and His promise to the fathers. God heard. This is a picture of intercession, praying on behalf of others.

  2. What did Moses call the people?

  3. What did Moses appeal to in prayer?

Deuteronomy 9 · Grade 5

The Intercessor

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 9 dismantles pride. Three times Moses says, Not for your righteousness. God would go before Israel as a devouring fire, but the victory would be His. The nations were being judged for their wickedness, and God was keeping His oath to the patriarchs. Israel, Moses says, was a stiff-necked people.

The evidence is their record. From the day they left Egypt they had rebelled. At Horeb, in the very shadow of the mountain, they cast a golden calf. Moses broke the tablets before their eyes, burned the calf, ground it to dust, and threw the dust into the brook. At Taberah, Massah, Kibroth Hattaavah, and Kadesh Barnea they provoked God again.

Moses lay prostrate forty days and nights, neither eating bread nor drinking water. His prayer pleaded God's reputation, God's redemption, and God's promises, not Israel's merit. God listened. Moses here points ahead to Jesus, who always lives to intercede for His people (Hebrews 7:25).

Show What You Know

  1. What does Deuteronomy 9 dismantle?

  2. Why were the nations being judged?

  3. What did Moses do with the calf?

  4. What did Moses' prayer not appeal to?

  5. How does Moses point ahead to Jesus?
