Deuteronomy 9 · Grade 5

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 9 dismantles pride. Three times Moses says, Not for your righteousness. God would go before Israel as a devouring fire, but the victory would be His. The nations were being judged for their wickedness, and God was keeping His oath to the patriarchs. Israel, Moses says, was a stiff-necked people.

The evidence is their record. From the day they left Egypt they had rebelled. At Horeb, in the very shadow of the mountain, they cast a golden calf. Moses broke the tablets before their eyes, burned the calf, ground it to dust, and threw the dust into the brook. At Taberah, Massah, Kibroth Hattaavah, and Kadesh Barnea they provoked God again.

Moses lay prostrate forty days and nights, neither eating bread nor drinking water. His prayer pleaded God's reputation, God's redemption, and God's promises, not Israel's merit. God listened. Moses here points ahead to Jesus, who always lives to intercede for His people (Hebrews 7:25).
