Loved and Chosen

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses told Israel that they were a holy people, chosen by God to be His own. God did not choose them because they were greater than other nations. They were the fewest of all peoples.

God chose them because He loved them and kept the oath He swore to their fathers. He is the faithful God who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations of those who love Him.

Israel must not follow the gods of the nations in the land, but burn their idols. God promised to bless their families, grain, wine, oil, and flocks. When they felt afraid, they should remember what God did to Pharaoh. God would drive out the nations little by little.

Deuteronomy 7 · Grade 4

Chosen by Grace

Name Date

Read and Think

Moses calls Israel a holy people, a treasured possession chosen out of all the peoples on the earth. Then he explains why. It was not their size; they were the fewest of all peoples. God set His love on them simply because He loved them and kept His oath to their fathers.

Moses commanded Israel to make no covenant with the nations of Canaan and to destroy their idols and altars. This was God's judgment on those nations' wickedness (9:5). Israel was also warned not to take the silver and gold from idols, because it would become a snare.

God promised to keep covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations of those who love Him. When Israel felt small, they were to remember Egypt. God is a great and awesome God among His people. He would drive out the nations little by little, so the wild animals would not grow too many.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God choose Israel?

  2. Why were Israel told to destroy the idols?

  3. What does God keep to a thousand generations?

  4. Why would God drive out the nations little by little?

Deuteronomy 7 · Grade 5

Faithful to a Thousand Generations

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 7 explains election, God's choosing. Israel was a holy people and a treasured possession, but not because of greatness. They were the fewest of all peoples. The only reason given is God's love and His faithfulness to the oath He swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Grace, not merit, is the root of Israel's identity.

The chapter also commands Israel to make no covenant with the nations of Canaan, to avoid marriage with them, and to break down their altars and burn their images. Later Moses says it was for the wickedness of these nations that God drove them out (9:5). The danger was spiritual: their gods would turn Israel's heart away.

Moses then turns to comfort. If Israel asks how they can defeat nations more numerous than they are, they should remember what God did to Pharaoh. The faithful God keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations. He would drive out the nations little by little, showing patience and wisdom in how He fulfills His promises.

Show What You Know

  1. What is election?

  2. What reason does Moses give for God's choice?

  3. What was the spiritual danger of the nations?

  4. Why did God drive out the nations, according to 9:5?

  5. How should Israel answer their fear?
