Deuteronomy 7 · Grade 5

Faithful to a Thousand Generations

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 7 explains election, God's choosing. Israel was a holy people and a treasured possession, but not because of greatness. They were the fewest of all peoples. The only reason given is God's love and His faithfulness to the oath He swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Grace, not merit, is the root of Israel's identity.

The chapter also commands Israel to make no covenant with the nations of Canaan, to avoid marriage with them, and to break down their altars and burn their images. Later Moses says it was for the wickedness of these nations that God drove them out (9:5). The danger was spiritual: their gods would turn Israel's heart away.

Moses then turns to comfort. If Israel asks how they can defeat nations more numerous than they are, they should remember what God did to Pharaoh. The faithful God keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations. He would drive out the nations little by little, showing patience and wisdom in how He fulfills His promises.
