Words on Your Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses spoke the words that Israel would say every day. Hear, Israel: the Lord is our God. The Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.

God's words were to be on their hearts. Parents should teach them to their children when they sit at home, walk on the road, lie down, and get up. They could tie them on their hands and write them on their door posts and gates.

God was giving them cities they did not build and vineyards they did not plant. When they ate and were full, they must not forget Him. When a son asked what God's laws meant, the father should tell how God rescued them from Egypt.

Memory Verse

“You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.”

Deuteronomy 6 · Grade 4

The Great Commandment

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 is called the Shema, from the Hebrew word for hear. Hear, Israel: the Lord is our God. The Lord is one. Love Him with all your heart, soul, and might. Jesus said, The greatest is: Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one (Mark 12:29-30).

Moses said God's words must be on the heart first. Then parents were to teach them diligently, talking about them at home and on the road, at bedtime and in the morning. Faith was to be part of everyday family life, not only special days.

Moses warned that blessing can make people forget. In the land they would enjoy houses they did not fill and wells they did not dig. When they were full, they must remember the Lord. When children asked about the laws, parents should tell the story of rescue from Egypt.

Show What You Know

  1. What is the Shema?

  3. Where must God's words be first?

  4. How can blessing be a danger?

Deuteronomy 6 · Grade 5

Hear, Israel

Name Date

Read and Think

The Shema, named for its first Hebrew word, is the heart of Israel's faith: the Lord is our God, the Lord is one. It is both a confession and a call. Because there is only one God, He deserves all our love, with all our heart, soul, and might. Jesus said, The greatest is: Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one (Mark 12:29-30).

These words were to be on the heart, then taught diligently to children. Moses describes faith woven into ordinary rhythms: sitting at home, walking on the road, lying down, and rising. Binding them on the hand and writing them on door posts showed that God's word should guide what we do and where we live.

Then comes a warning. Israel would inherit great cities, full houses, cisterns, vineyards, and olive trees they did not build or plant. Comfort can make people forget the Giver. The answer was memory: when a child asks what the laws mean, tell how God brought you out of slavery with a mighty hand. Obedience grows from remembering grace.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is the Shema both a confession and a call?

  2. What did Jesus call this command?

  3. What ordinary times were for teaching God's word?

  4. What danger comes with comfort and plenty?

  5. What should parents tell a child who asks about the laws?
