Deuteronomy 6 · Grade 5
Hear, Israel
Read and Think
The Shema, named for its first Hebrew word, is the heart of Israel's faith: the Lord is our God, the Lord is one. It is both a confession and a call. Because there is only one God, He deserves all our love, with all our heart, soul, and might. Jesus said, The greatest is: Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one (Mark 12:29-30).
These words were to be on the heart, then taught diligently to children. Moses describes faith woven into ordinary rhythms: sitting at home, walking on the road, lying down, and rising. Binding them on the hand and writing them on door posts showed that God's word should guide what we do and where we live.
Then comes a warning. Israel would inherit great cities, full houses, cisterns, vineyards, and olive trees they did not build or plant. Comfort can make people forget the Giver. The answer was memory: when a child asks what the laws mean, tell how God brought you out of slavery with a mighty hand. Obedience grows from remembering grace.
