Deuteronomy 6 · Grade 4
The Great Commandment
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 is called the Shema, from the Hebrew word for hear. Hear, Israel: the Lord is our God. The Lord is one. Love Him with all your heart, soul, and might. Jesus said, The greatest is: Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one (Mark 12:29-30).
Moses said God's words must be on the heart first. Then parents were to teach them diligently, talking about them at home and on the road, at bedtime and in the morning. Faith was to be part of everyday family life, not only special days.
Moses warned that blessing can make people forget. In the land they would enjoy houses they did not fill and wells they did not dig. When they were full, they must remember the Lord. When children asked about the laws, parents should tell the story of rescue from Egypt.
