Ten Words on Stone

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses called all Israel and told them to hear God's statutes and learn them. God made a covenant with them at Horeb. He spoke face to face with them out of the fire.

God began, I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt. Then came the commands. Have no other gods. Make no idols. Do not misuse God's name. Keep the Sabbath, because you were slaves in Egypt. Honor your parents.

Do not murder, commit adultery, steal, or give false testimony. Do not covet what belongs to your neighbor. The people were afraid of the fire. They asked Moses to hear God for them. God wished they would always have such a heart to obey Him.

Deuteronomy 5 · Grade 4

Rescued, Then Commanded

Name Date

Read and Think

In his second speech, Moses repeats the Ten Commandments for the new generation. He says the covenant was not only with their fathers but with them, all who were alive that day. God's word was for them personally.

The commands begin with grace. God first says who He is, the One who brought them out of slavery. Only then does He give His commands. In Deuteronomy, the Sabbath is tied to remembering slavery in Egypt, so that servants, foreigners, and even animals could rest too.

The people trembled at the great fire and asked Moses to listen to God for them. God approved and said, Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always. God's laws were meant for their good and for their children.

  2. How do the commands begin with grace?

  3. Why could servants and animals rest on the Sabbath?

Deuteronomy 5 · Grade 5

A Heart to Obey

Name Date

Read and Think

Forty years after Sinai, Moses gathers Israel and declares that God made His covenant not with their fathers only, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. Every generation must hear God's word as spoken to them.

The Ten Commandments open with God's identity: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Grace comes before law. Deuteronomy's Sabbath command adds a reason not found in Exodus 20: remember that you were a servant in Egypt, so let your servants rest as you do. The last command forbids even desiring a neighbor's wife, house, field, or animals.

Terrified by the fire, the people asked Moses to stand between them and God. God said they spoke well, and added a longing: Oh that there were such a heart in them. Jesus later summed up these commandments as love for God and for neighbor (Mark 12:29-31), and through Him God gives a new heart.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Moses say the covenant was made with us?

  2. What comes before law in the commandments?

  3. What reason does Deuteronomy give for the Sabbath?

  4. What does the last command forbid?

  5. How did Jesus sum up the commandments?
