Deuteronomy 4 · Grade 3

Seek Him with All Your Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses told Israel to listen to God's laws so they could live and go into the land. They must not add to God's word or take away from it. Other nations would see how wise God's laws were.

At Horeb, God spoke to them from the middle of the fire. They heard a voice but saw no form. That is why they must never make an image of any man, animal, bird, or fish to worship. God wrote the ten commandments on two stone tablets.

Moses warned that if they turned to idols, they would be scattered. But if they sought God with all their heart, they would find Him, for He is a merciful God. Moses also set apart three cities of refuge east of the Jordan.

Deuteronomy 4 · Grade 4

A God So Near

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 4 ends Moses' first speech with a call to obey. God's laws were Israel's wisdom. Other nations would ask what great nation has a god so near, and laws so righteous. Israel must not add to God's word or take away from it.

Moses reminded them of Horeb. They heard God's voice out of the fire, but saw no form. So they must not carve images of people, animals, birds, or fish, or worship the sun, moon, and stars. God brought them out of the iron furnace of Egypt to be His own people.

Moses warned that idolatry would lead to exile. Yet even then, if they sought God with all their heart, they would find Him, because He is merciful and remembers His covenant. Moses asked if any people had heard God speak from fire and lived. The lesson was clear: the Lord is God in heaven and on earth, and there is no one else.

Deuteronomy 4 · Grade 5

The Voice from the Fire

Name Date

Read and Think

Moses' first speech closes with a strong appeal. God's statutes were not a burden but Israel's wisdom. Nations would marvel at a people whose God was near whenever they called, and whose laws were righteous. So Israel must neither add to God's word nor take away from it, and must teach it to their children and grandchildren.

At Horeb, the people heard the voice of words from the middle of the fire, but saw no form. Because of this, Moses forbade making any image, whether of man or woman, beast, bird, creeping thing, or fish, and forbade worshiping the sun, moon, and stars. The invisible God cannot be captured in anything He has made.

Moses predicted that idolatry would bring scattering among the nations. Yet he also promised that from there, if they sought God with all their heart and soul, they would find Him, for He is a merciful God who will not forget His covenant. Moses then set apart three cities of refuge, a picture of mercy built into the law.

  2. Who must the people teach?

  3. Why were images forbidden?

  4. What hope did Moses give even after scattering?

  5. What did Moses set apart at the end?
