Deuteronomy 4 · Grade 5
The Voice from the Fire
Read and Think
Moses' first speech closes with a strong appeal. God's statutes were not a burden but Israel's wisdom. Nations would marvel at a people whose God was near whenever they called, and whose laws were righteous. So Israel must neither add to God's word nor take away from it, and must teach it to their children and grandchildren.
At Horeb, the people heard the voice of words from the middle of the fire, but saw no form. Because of this, Moses forbade making any image, whether of man or woman, beast, bird, creeping thing, or fish, and forbade worshiping the sun, moon, and stars. The invisible God cannot be captured in anything He has made.
Moses predicted that idolatry would bring scattering among the nations. Yet he also promised that from there, if they sought God with all their heart and soul, they would find Him, for He is a merciful God who will not forget His covenant. Moses then set apart three cities of refuge, a picture of mercy built into the law.
