Face to Face

Read the Story

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo. From the top of Pisgah, God showed him all the land, from Gilead to Dan, to the western sea, and to Zoar. God said this was the land He swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses saw it, but would not go over.

Moses the servant of Yahweh died there, as God had said. God buried him in a valley in Moab, and no one knows his grave. He was 120 years old. His eye was not dim, nor his strength gone. Israel wept for him thirty days.

Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. Israel listened to Joshua. No prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew face to face, who did great signs and wonders.

Deuteronomy 34 · Grade 4

The End of Moses' Journey

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy ends with Moses on Mount Nebo. God showed him the whole land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses could see it but not enter, because of his sin at Meribah. Yet God Himself showed him the land, a tender kindness.

Moses died as the servant of Yahweh, and God buried him in an unknown grave. At 120 his eye was not dim and his strength was not gone. Israel mourned thirty days. Centuries later Moses appeared with Jesus at the transfiguration (Luke 9:30-31).

Joshua, full of the spirit of wisdom, took up the leadership. The book closes by saying no prophet arose like Moses, whom God knew face to face. Yet Moses had promised a prophet like him (18:15). Christians believe Jesus is that greater Prophet (Acts 3:22).

Show What You Know

  1. Why could Moses not enter the land?

  2. Where was Moses buried?

  3. Where did Moses later appear with Jesus?

  4. Who is the greater Prophet?

Deuteronomy 34 · Grade 5

No Prophet Like Moses

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 34 forms a fitting close to the Torah. Moses climbed from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, the top of Pisgah opposite Jericho. Yahweh showed him the entire land: Gilead to Dan, all Naphtali, Ephraim and Manasseh, Judah to the western sea, the Negev, and the plain of Jericho to Zoar. This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Moses saw the promise but, because of his failure at Meribah, could not cross over.

So Moses the servant of Yahweh died there in the land of Moab, according to Yahweh's word. God Himself buried him in a valley in Moab, and no one knows his tomb. He was 120 years old, yet his eye was not dim, nor his strength gone. Israel wept thirty days. Moses' story does not end in a grave: he appears with Elijah beside the transfigured Jesus, speaking of His departure (Luke 9:30-31).

Leadership passed to Joshua, full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid hands on him. The epilogue declares that no prophet arose in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew face to face. That statement leaves the reader waiting for the prophet like Moses promised in 18:15. Hebrews 3:3-6 explains that Moses was faithful as a servant in God's house, but Christ is faithful as a Son over it.

Show What You Know

  1. From where did Moses view the land?

  2. Who buried Moses?

  3. With whom does Moses appear beside Jesus?

  4. Why was Joshua full of wisdom?

  5. How does Hebrews 3 compare Moses and Christ?

  2. Why is it fitting that the Torah ends by pointing beyond Moses?
