Moses sang a song to the people. He said, God is the Rock. All He does is perfect. He is always fair and true.

God found Israel in a dry, empty land. He took care of them. He kept them safe, like the most precious thing in His eye. He was like a mother eagle. She spreads her wings and carries her babies.

But the people forgot the Rock who saved them. Moses told them to remember this song. He said God's words were their life. Then God told Moses to climb a mountain and look at the land.

The Rock and the Eagle

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses spoke a song so Israel would remember God. He called heaven and earth to listen. God is the Rock. His work is perfect. He is a God of faithfulness who does no wrong.

God found Israel in a desert land and kept him as the apple of His eye. Like an eagle stirring up her nest, He spread His wings and carried them. God alone led them, with no foreign god.

But Israel grew fat and forgot the Rock of their salvation. They chased other gods, and God warned of judgment. Yet He would have compassion on His servants. Moses said God's words were their life (32:47). Then God told Moses to climb Mount Nebo to see the land.

The Rock of Salvation

Deuteronomy 32 · Grade 5

A Song as Witness

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 32 is the Song of Moses, written as a witness for generations who would turn away (31:19). It summons heaven and earth as witnesses and begins in praise: The Rock: his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. The title Rock recurs throughout the song, contrasting the faithful God with the worthless rocks of the nations.

The song retells history from God's side. Yahweh's portion is His people. He found Jacob in a desert land, surrounded and cared for him, and kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up her nest, God trained and carried His people. But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked, abandoning the God who made him and provoking Him with strange gods.

Judgment follows, yet the song turns toward hope. Yahweh will judge his people, and have compassion on his servants. See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. The song closes with God avenging His servants and making atonement for His land and people. Moses urged, It is no vain thing for you, because it is your life. Then God sent Moses up Mount Nebo to view the land he would not enter, because he had broken faith at Meribah.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the title Rock contrast?

  2. What did God do for Jacob in the desert?

  3. What did Jeshurun do?

  4. What does God declare about Himself?

  5. Why could Moses not enter the land?
