Deuteronomy 32 · Grade 5
A Song as Witness
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 32 is the Song of Moses, written as a witness for generations who would turn away (31:19). It summons heaven and earth as witnesses and begins in praise: The Rock: his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. The title Rock recurs throughout the song, contrasting the faithful God with the worthless rocks of the nations.
The song retells history from God's side. Yahweh's portion is His people. He found Jacob in a desert land, surrounded and cared for him, and kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up her nest, God trained and carried His people. But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked, abandoning the God who made him and provoking Him with strange gods.
Judgment follows, yet the song turns toward hope. Yahweh will judge his people, and have compassion on his servants. See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. The song closes with God avenging His servants and making atonement for His land and people. Moses urged, It is no vain thing for you, because it is your life. Then God sent Moses up Mount Nebo to view the land he would not enter, because he had broken faith at Meribah.
