Deuteronomy 30 · Grade 3

Life Set Before You

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses said that if Israel was scattered and then returned to God with all their heart, God would gather them from far away. He would bring them back to the land. He would circumcise their hearts so they would love Him with all their heart and soul.

God's commandment was not too hard or too far away. No one needed to go up to the sky or cross the sea to bring it. The word was very near, in their mouth and in their heart, so they could do it.

Moses called heaven and earth as witnesses. He set before them life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life, he said, to love God, obey His voice, and cling to Him. For He is your life.

Memory Verse

“Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your offspring, to love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.”

Deuteronomy 30 · Grade 4

A Changed Heart and a Clear Choice

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 30 looks past exile to hope. Even if Israel were scattered to the ends of heaven, God would gather them when they returned to Him. More than that, God would circumcise their hearts. He would do inside them what they could not do themselves, so they could love Him fully.

God's word was not hidden in the sky or across the sea. It was very near, in the mouth and heart. Paul quotes this passage in Romans 10. The word near you is the message of faith: confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him.

Moses ends with a choice. Life and death, blessing and curse, were set before them. Choose life, that you may live. Life meant loving God, obeying Him, and clinging to Him, for He is your life.

Deuteronomy 30 · Grade 5

Choose Life, That You May Live

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 30 anticipates both exile and restoration. When all these things had come upon Israel, both blessing and curse, they could call them to mind among the nations and return to Yahweh with all their heart. God would then release them from captivity, have compassion, and gather them even from the farthest parts under heaven. Most importantly, Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart. This promise anticipates the new covenant of Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36, fulfilled through the Spirit (Romans 2:29).

Moses insists that God's command is not too hard or too distant. It is not in heaven, nor beyond the sea, that someone must fetch it. The word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart. In Romans 10:6-10 Paul applies these lines to the gospel. Christ has come down and been raised, so the righteousness of faith says the word is near: confess Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart.

Calling heaven and earth as witnesses, Moses sets before Israel life and death, blessing and curse, and pleads, Therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants. Choosing life is relational: to love Yahweh, obey His voice, and cling to Him, for he is your life, and the length of your days. The choice was real, and God's grace made it possible.

  1. Where could Israel return to God from?

  2. What new covenant passages does the heart promise anticipate?

  4. Why is choosing life relational?
