A Look from Pisgah

Name Date

Read the Story

Og king of Bashan came out to fight Israel at Edrei. God told Moses not to fear him, and God gave Israel the victory. Og was very big. His bed was made of iron and was nine cubits long.

Moses gave land east of the Jordan to Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh. Their families could stay there, but their soldiers had to cross over and help their brothers until God gave them rest too.

Moses begged God to let him cross and see the good land. God said that was enough. He told Moses to climb Pisgah and look in every direction. God told him to encourage and strengthen Joshua, who would lead Israel across.

Memory Verse

But commission Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you shall see.”

Deuteronomy 3 · Grade 4

A Leader Who Could Not Go In

Name Date

Read and Think

God gave Israel victory over a second king, Og of Bashan, a giant whose iron bed was about thirteen feet long. Moses told Joshua that he had seen what God did to these two kings, and God would do the same in the land across the Jordan.

The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh received land east of the Jordan. Their families and herds could settle there, but their soldiers had to cross with everyone else. Each tribe was to care about the others, not only itself.

Moses pleaded with God to let him cross over. God said not to speak of it again. Instead God showed Moses the land from the top of Pisgah and told him to strengthen Joshua. Moses accepted God's answer and prepared the next leader.

Deuteronomy 3 · Grade 5

Strengthen the Next Leader

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 3 completes Israel's victories east of the Jordan. Og king of Bashan came out to battle at Edrei, but God told Moses not to fear, and Og fell as Sihon had. The note about Og's iron bedstead, nine cubits long, reminds readers how great the threat had seemed, and how much greater God is.

Moses gave this land to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh, on one condition. Their soldiers must cross the Jordan armed and fight beside their brothers until God gave all Israel rest. Unity mattered more than comfort.

Then Moses shares a personal prayer. He asked to cross over and see the good land, praising God's greatness. God said, That is enough. Moses could only see the land from Pisgah, and his task was to commission, encourage, and strengthen Joshua. Faithful leaders prepare others to carry on what they cannot finish.

  1. Where did Israel fight Og?

  2. What does the iron bed remind readers?

  3. What condition was put on the eastern tribes?
