Standing Before God Together

Name Date

Read the Story

In the land of Moab, Moses gathered all Israel to make a covenant with God. Leaders, men, wives, and little ones came. Foreigners came. Even those who cut wood and carried water stood before God. The covenant was also for children not yet born.

Moses reminded them of the forty years. Their clothes and sandals had not worn out. They had not eaten bread or drunk wine. This was so they would know that Yahweh was their God.

Moses warned against a root that bears poison and bitterness. That is a person who turns to idols but thinks he will be safe. Then Moses said, The secret things belong to God. But the things revealed belong to us and our children forever.

Memory Verse

“The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

The Secret and the Revealed

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 29 renews the covenant in Moab. Every part of the community stood before God, from leaders to water carriers, foreigners, and little ones. The covenant also reached those not here with us today, future generations, including us in a sense.

Moses recalled God's daily care. For forty years their clothes and sandals did not wear out. Yet he also said that God had not given them a heart to know or eyes to see. They needed God to open their hearts.

Moses warned that anyone who secretly turned to idols, thinking he would be safe, would bring ruin. The chapter ends with a famous verse. Some things are God's secret. But what He has revealed is ours to know and to do.

Deuteronomy 29 · Grade 5

A Covenant for Generations

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 29 begins the covenant renewal in Moab, adding to the covenant made at Horeb. The whole nation stood before Yahweh. Leaders, men, wives, and little ones were there, along with foreigners, woodcutters, and water carriers. The covenant was also with those not here with us today, extending to later generations. God's covenant always gathers the whole community, the humble and the great.

Moses recalled God's care. There were plagues in Egypt and forty years of clothing and sandals that did not wear out. There was victory over Sihon and Og. Yet Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day. Israel needed an inner change only God could give. Chapter 30 picks up this theme with the promise of a circumcised heart.

Moses warned against anyone who hears the curse yet blesses himself in his heart. He thinks he will have peace while walking in stubbornness. Such idolatry would bring ruin like Sodom and Gomorrah. The nations would ask why. The chapter closes with a principle for all Bible reading: The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Show What You Know

  1. What covenant did this renewal add to?

  2. Who did the covenant extend to?

  3. What did Israel need that only God could give?

  4. What does the hidden idolater think?

  5. Why are revealed things given to us?
