Deuteronomy 27 · Grade 3

The Law in Plain Sight

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses and the elders told Israel to keep all God's commands. After crossing the Jordan, they must set up great stones on Mount Ebal. They must coat them with plaster. Then they must write all the words of the law very plainly.

There they must build an altar of stones. No iron tool could touch them. They would give offerings, eat there, and be glad before God. Moses said, Today you have become the people of God, so obey His voice.

Six tribes would stand on Mount Gerizim to bless. Six would stand on Mount Ebal for the curse. The Levites would call out curses on secret wrongs. Some made idols in secret. Some did not honor parents. Some moved a neighbor's landmark, led the blind astray, or took a bribe. All the people would answer, Amen.

Memory Verse

“You shall sacrifice peace offerings, and shall eat there. You shall rejoice before Yahweh your God.”

Deuteronomy 27 · Grade 4

Amen to God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 27 prepares for a covenant ceremony in the land. On Mount Ebal, Israel would set up plastered stones. The whole law would be written on them very plainly. Then God's word would stand in public view. An altar of uncut stones would be built nearby for offerings.

Moses declared, Today you have become the people of Yahweh your God. Covenant identity came first; obedience followed. Joshua later carried out this ceremony (Joshua 8:30-35).

Six tribes stood on Gerizim for blessing and six on Ebal for curses. The Levites named twelve curses. Many were on sins done in secret, like hidden idols, moved landmarks, and bribes. All Israel answered Amen. The final curse falls on anyone who does not keep all the law. Paul quotes it to show that we need Christ (Galatians 3:10-13). He took the curse for us.

Show What You Know

  1. Why were the words written on plastered stones?

  2. What came first, identity or obedience?

  3. Who later carried out this ceremony?

  4. Why does Paul quote the final curse?

Deuteronomy 27 · Grade 5

Blessing, Curse, and Amen

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 27 pauses Moses' speech to describe a covenant ceremony in Canaan. Large stones coated with plaster were to be set up on Mount Ebal, with all the words of this law written very plainly. Beside them stood an altar of uncut stones, untouched by iron tools. There the people would offer sacrifices, eat, and rejoice before God.

Moses and the Levitical priests announced, Be silent and listen, Israel! Today you have become the people of Yahweh your God. God's grace established the covenant. Obedience was the fitting response. Joshua fulfilled this command at Ebal and Gerizim after the conquest of Ai (Joshua 8:30-35).

Six tribes stood on Gerizim to bless, and six on Ebal for the curse. The Levites then pronounced twelve curses, mostly on hidden sins. These included a secret idol, dishonoring parents, moving a boundary, and misleading the blind. Others were injustice to the foreigner, secret murder, and bribery. To each, all the people said, Amen. The last curse falls on anyone who doesn't uphold the words of this law by doing them. Paul quotes this in Galatians 3:10-13 to show that no one keeps the law perfectly, and that Christ redeemed us by becoming a curse for us.

Show What You Know

  1. What would stand beside the plastered stones?

  2. What established the covenant?

  3. When did Joshua fulfill this command?

  4. What did most of the twelve curses address?

  5. What does Paul show with the last curse?
