Deuteronomy 27 · Grade 4
Amen to God's Word
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 27 prepares for a covenant ceremony in the land. On Mount Ebal, Israel would set up plastered stones. The whole law would be written on them very plainly. Then God's word would stand in public view. An altar of uncut stones would be built nearby for offerings.
Moses declared, Today you have become the people of Yahweh your God. Covenant identity came first; obedience followed. Joshua later carried out this ceremony (Joshua 8:30-35).
Six tribes stood on Gerizim for blessing and six on Ebal for curses. The Levites named twelve curses. Many were on sins done in secret, like hidden idols, moved landmarks, and bribes. All Israel answered Amen. The final curse falls on anyone who does not keep all the law. Paul quotes it to show that we need Christ (Galatians 3:10-13). He took the curse for us.
