God said, When you live in the land, bring Me the first of your fruit. Put it in a basket. Take it to God's place. The priest will set it before the altar.

Then tell the story. My family was small. We went to Egypt. People were mean to us. We were slaves. We cried to God. God heard us. He brought us out. He gave us this good land.

Then be glad. Share with the Levite and the person far from home. God said, You are My people.

Remember and Give Thanks

Name Date

Read the Story

When Israel lived in the land, each family would put the first of the harvest in a basket and bring it to the place God chose. The priest would set the basket down before the altar.

The giver would tell the story of God's faithfulness. My father was a Syrian ready to perish. He went down into Egypt few in number. The Egyptians mistreated us. We cried to God, and He heard our voice. He brought us out with a mighty hand and gave us a land flowing with milk and honey.

Then they would worship and rejoice with their household, the Levite, and the foreigner. Every third year they gave the tithe to the needy. Israel declared that the Lord was their God, and God declared that they were His own people.

Memory Verse

“You shall rejoice in all the good which Yahweh your God has given to you, and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the foreigner who is among you.”

Telling God's Story

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 26 describes a ceremony of thanks. In the land, the worshiper brought the first of the harvest in a basket. He took it to God's chosen place. Giving the first, not the leftovers, showed that all came from God.

Then he told Israel's story in a few lines. There was a wandering father and slavery in Egypt. They cried for help, and God came to rescue them. He gave them a land flowing with milk and honey. Each generation said we and us, making the story their own. Thanksgiving was remembering what God had done.

After worship came joy with the Levite and the foreigner. Every third year a tithe went to the needy. The chapter ends with a covenant promise. Israel said that Yahweh was their God. God said that Israel was His own treasured people.

Deuteronomy 26 · Grade 5

My Father Was a Syrian Ready to Perish

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 26 closes the central law code with worship. Once settled in the land, an Israelite brought the first of all the fruit of the ground in a basket to the sanctuary and declared that he had come into the land God swore to give. The priest set the basket before the altar. Firstfruits acknowledged that the whole harvest belonged to God.

Then came a short confession of faith, Israel's story in a few lines. My father was a Syrian ready to perish, likely Jacob. He went down to Egypt few in number and became a great nation. The Egyptians afflicted us; we cried to Yahweh; He heard, saw our affliction, and brought us out with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Each worshiper spoke as if he personally had been rescued. Faith is rooted in God's acts in history.

The offering led to shared joy with the Levite and the foreigner. In the third year, the tithe went to the Levite, foreigner, fatherless, and widow, and the giver prayed, Look down from your holy habitation and bless your people. The chapter ends with mutual declaration: Israel affirmed that Yahweh was their God, and Yahweh affirmed that Israel was His own possession, a holy people. Peter echoes this when he calls the church God's own possession (1 Peter 2:9).
