Deuteronomy 26 · Grade 4
Telling God's Story
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 26 describes a ceremony of thanks. In the land, the worshiper brought the first of the harvest in a basket. He took it to God's chosen place. Giving the first, not the leftovers, showed that all came from God.
Then he told Israel's story in a few lines. There was a wandering father and slavery in Egypt. They cried for help, and God came to rescue them. He gave them a land flowing with milk and honey. Each generation said we and us, making the story their own. Thanksgiving was remembering what God had done.
After worship came joy with the Levite and the foreigner. Every third year a tithe went to the needy. The chapter ends with a covenant promise. Israel said that Yahweh was their God. God said that Israel was His own treasured people.
