God said, If you see your neighbor's sheep or ox lost, do not hide. Bring it back to him. If you do not know who owns it, keep it safe until he comes.

If your neighbor's donkey falls down on the road, help him lift it up. Do the same for any lost thing you find.

If you find a bird's nest, you may take the eggs. But let the mother bird go. When you build a house, put a rail around the roof. Then no one will fall off.

Deuteronomy 22 · Grade 3

Love in Little Things

Name Date

Read the Story

If Israelites saw their brother's ox or sheep going astray, they must not hide themselves. They must bring it back. If the owner lived far away or was unknown, they must keep it at home until he came looking for it. The same was true for a donkey, a garment, or any lost thing.

If a neighbor's donkey or ox fell down on the road, they must help lift it up. If they found a bird's nest, they could take the young, but must let the mother go.

A new house needed a railing around the flat roof, so that no one would fall. Israel must not mix seeds in a vineyard or plow with an ox and a donkey together. They wore tassels on their cloaks. God also gave laws to protect marriage.

Memory Verse

“You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep go astray and hide yourself from them. You shall surely bring them again to your brother.”

Deuteronomy 22 · Grade 4

Neighbor Love in Daily Life

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 22 shows love for neighbor in daily life. You may not hide yourself when you see a neighbor's animal lost or fallen. Israel must return lost things, keep them safe until the owner came, and help lift fallen animals. Jesus' story of the good Samaritan teaches the same lesson (Luke 10:30-37). Do not walk by.

Other laws show care for creation and safety. A mother bird must be released when eggs or young were taken. A flat roof needed a railing to prevent deadly falls. Responsibility for others' safety was part of loving them.

Laws against mixing seeds, animals, or cloth reminded Israel to be different and orderly. Tassels on cloaks reminded them of God's commands. The rest of the chapter gives laws to protect marriage. It also guards women from false accusation and violence.

Deuteronomy 22 · Grade 5

You May Not Hide Yourself

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 22 applies love of neighbor to concrete situations. If a brother's ox or sheep strayed, an Israelite must bring it back; if the owner was far away or unknown, he must keep it until it was claimed. The same applied to a donkey, a garment, or any lost thing. The repeated phrase, you may not hide yourself, forbids looking the other way. Jesus' good Samaritan story makes the same point (Luke 10:30-37).

The law also showed care for creation and human life. A person could take young birds or eggs, but must let the mother go, that it may be well with you. A railing on the roof prevented bloodguilt if someone fell. Preventing harm is part of loving your neighbor.

Laws against mixing seed, plowing with an ox and donkey together, or weaving wool and linen together taught Israel to honor God's created order and to remain distinct from the nations. Tassels on the corners of a cloak recalled God's commands (Numbers 15:39). The chapter closes with laws that protected the marriage covenant and defended women against slander and violence.
