Deuteronomy 22 · Grade 5

You May Not Hide Yourself

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 22 applies love of neighbor to concrete situations. If a brother's ox or sheep strayed, an Israelite must bring it back; if the owner was far away or unknown, he must keep it until it was claimed. The same applied to a donkey, a garment, or any lost thing. The repeated phrase, you may not hide yourself, forbids looking the other way. Jesus' good Samaritan story makes the same point (Luke 10:30-37).

The law also showed care for creation and human life. A person could take young birds or eggs, but must let the mother go, that it may be well with you. A railing on the roof prevented bloodguilt if someone fell. Preventing harm is part of loving your neighbor.

Laws against mixing seed, plowing with an ox and donkey together, or weaving wool and linen together taught Israel to honor God's created order and to remain distinct from the nations. Tassels on the corners of a cloak recalled God's commands (Numbers 15:39). The chapter closes with laws that protected the marriage covenant and defended women against slander and violence.
