Fair and Forgiven

Name Date

Read the Story

Sometimes a man was found dead in a field. No one knew who did it. The leaders of the closest town came. They washed their hands and said, We did not do this. Lord, forgive Your people.

God also said a father must be fair. He must give his first son the part that is his. He must not take it away.

When a man died for a crime, his body must be buried the same day. Paul later wrote that Jesus took our curse (Galatians 3:13).

Justice in the Land

Read the Story

Sometimes a person was found killed in a field, and no one knew who did it. The elders found the nearest city. Its elders washed their hands. They said, Our hands have not shed this blood. They prayed, Forgive Your people Israel. God cared that innocent blood not stain the land.

Moses gave laws about family life. A father with two wives must give the double portion to his true firstborn son. He must do this even if he loved the other wife more. A son who would not obey was brought to the elders. Rebellion was serious in Israel.

If a man was put to death and hung on a tree, his body must be buried that same day. One who is hanged is cursed by God. Paul later wrote that Christ became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13).

Deuteronomy 21 · Grade 4

Innocent Blood and a Tree

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 21 opens with an unsolved murder. A killing made the land unclean, even when no one knew the killer. So the elders of the nearest town offered a heifer and washed their hands. They said they were innocent and asked God to forgive His people. The whole town took responsibility for justice.

Other laws protected the weak in families. A woman taken captive in war must have a month to mourn, and she could not be sold as a slave. A man with two wives could not take the double portion from his firstborn son. A stubborn son who was a glutton and a drunkard faced the elders. Israel took honoring parents very seriously.

The chapter ends with a law that points to the cross. A man hanged on a tree must be buried the same day, for he is cursed by God. Paul quotes this in Galatians 3:13. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us.

Deuteronomy 21 · Grade 5

Cursed Is One Who Hangs on a Tree

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 21 begins with an unsolved homicide. Bloodshed polluted the land, so the elders measured to the nearest city. Its elders broke the neck of a heifer in an untilled valley, washed their hands over it, declared that their hands had not shed this blood, and prayed, Forgive, Yahweh, your people Israel, whom you have redeemed. Communities bear responsibility for justice even when the guilty party is hidden.

Several family laws follow, written for a world of war and polygamy. A captive woman could become a wife only after a month of mourning and could never be sold or treated as a slave. A man with two wives could not transfer the firstborn's double portion out of favoritism. A persistently rebellious son, a glutton and drunkard, was brought by both parents to the elders and faced death. These laws limited abuse and upheld the family, though Jesus later showed God's original design for marriage (Matthew 19:4-8).

The final law commands that a body hanged on a tree be buried the same day, for he who is hanged is accursed of God. Paul applies this to Jesus: Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (Galatians 3:13). The tree of curse became the place of our redemption.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the elders act on an unsolved killing?

  2. How did the captive woman law limit abuse?

  3. Who brought the rebellious son to the elders?

  4. What did Jesus show about marriage?

  5. What did the tree of curse become?
