Deuteronomy 20 · Grade 3

Courage and Care

Name Date

Read the Story

When Israel saw horses, chariots, and armies bigger than theirs, they must not be afraid, because God who brought them out of Egypt was with them. Before battle, the priest would say, Do not let your heart faint. God goes with you to fight for you.

The officers sent some men home: anyone who had built a new house, planted a vineyard, or was engaged to marry. Anyone who was fearful could also go home, so that his fear would not spread.

When they came near a city far away, they must first offer peace. During a long siege, they must not cut down fruit trees, for they could eat from them. God cared even for the trees.

Memory Verse

“When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, is with you.”

Deuteronomy 20 · Grade 4

God Fights for His People

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 20 gives laws for war in Israel's time. Israel's confidence was not in horses or chariots but in God, who had already defeated Egypt. Before battle, the priest reminded them that God goes with you to fight for you and to save you.

Officers sent home men who had a new house, a new vineyard, or a promised bride, so they could enjoy God's gifts. Fearful men also went home. Israel's strength did not depend on numbers.

Distant cities were offered peace first. The Canaanite cities were treated differently. God commanded their destruction as His judgment on their sin and to keep Israel from learning their abominations. This was a specific command for that time, not a pattern for today. Even in war, fruit trees must be spared.

Deuteronomy 20 · Grade 5

The Lord Is with You

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 20 regulates warfare for Israel as it entered Canaan. Facing horses, chariots, and larger armies, Israel must not fear, for Yahweh your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, is with you. The priest's address emphasized that victory came from God, not military strength, a theme later seen with Gideon and David.

The exemptions are surprising. Men who had built a new house, planted a vineyard, or become engaged went home so they could enjoy what God had given. The fearful and faint-hearted went home too, lest his brother's heart melt as his heart. God valued ordinary life and did not need a large army.

Distant cities were first offered peace. The cities of the Canaanite nations, however, were placed under God's judgment, so that they not teach you to follow all their abominations. This was God's specific judgment at a unique moment, not a model for later wars. Even in a siege, Israel must not destroy fruit trees, for is the tree of the field man? Creation itself was protected.

Show What You Know

  1. Where did Israel's victory come from?

  2. Why were new homeowners and fearful men sent home?

  3. Why were the Canaanite cities judged?

  4. Was this a model for later wars?

  5. What did the fruit tree law protect?
