Deuteronomy 20 · Grade 3
Courage and Care
Read the Story
When Israel saw horses, chariots, and armies bigger than theirs, they must not be afraid, because God who brought them out of Egypt was with them. Before battle, the priest would say, Do not let your heart faint. God goes with you to fight for you.
The officers sent some men home: anyone who had built a new house, planted a vineyard, or was engaged to marry. Anyone who was fearful could also go home, so that his fear would not spread.
When they came near a city far away, they must first offer peace. During a long siege, they must not cut down fruit trees, for they could eat from them. God cared even for the trees.
Memory Verse
“When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, is with you.”
