God Knew Every Step

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses told the people about the long walk. They walked around a big mountain for many days. Then God said, Turn north.

God told them not to fight with Edom. Edom came from Esau, Jacob's brother. God told them to pay money for food and water. He said not to fight Moab or Ammon too. God had given those lands to them.

God had been with Israel for forty years. They had all they needed. A king named Sihon would not let them pass. So God gave Israel the win.

Peace with the Neighbors

Name Date

Read the Story

After Kadesh, Israel traveled in the wilderness for many years. They circled Mount Seir until God said it was time to turn north. The older generation died in the wilderness, just as God had said.

God told Israel not to fight with the children of Esau in Edom, or with Moab and Ammon, the children of Lot. God had given them their lands. Israel was to buy food and water with money and pass by in peace.

Moses said God had blessed the work of their hands and knew their walk through the great wilderness. For forty years they lacked nothing. When Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let them pass, God gave Israel the victory.

Memory Verse

“For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, Yahweh your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”

Deuteronomy 2 · Grade 4

God Draws the Borders

Name Date

Read and Think

The long years of wandering are covered quickly. Israel circled Mount Seir many days, and the fighting men of the older generation died, as God had said at Kadesh. Then God said they had circled long enough and should turn north.

God set limits. Edom belonged to Esau's children, and Moab and Ammon to Lot's children. Israel was to buy food and water and pass through peacefully. God rules the nations and gives lands to whom He wills.

Moses sent words of peace to Sihon king of Heshbon, asking only to pass along the road. Sihon refused and came out to fight. God delivered him to Israel. Through it all, Moses could say that God had been with them forty years, and they had lacked nothing.

Show What You Know

  1. Who died during the wandering years?

  2. Why could Israel not take Edom, Moab, or Ammon?

  3. What did Moses first send to Sihon?

  4. What could Moses say about the forty years?

Deuteronomy 2 · Grade 5

Forty Years, Lacking Nothing

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 2 sums up nearly four decades in a few lines. After Kadesh, Israel circled Mount Seir until every fighting man of that generation had died, fulfilling God's word. Only then did God say, You have circled long enough. Turn north.

Along the way, God marked out lands He had already given to other peoples. Edom was for Esau's children, Moab and Ammon for Lot's. Israel must not provoke them, but buy food and water with money. Even Israel's march toward the promise was bounded by God's justice toward their neighbors.

Moses offered peace to Sihon king of Heshbon, but Sihon refused, and God gave Israel the victory. The text presents the destruction of Sihon's cities as God's judgment. Yet the heart of the chapter is verse 7: God knew their walking through that great wilderness, and for forty years they lacked nothing.

Show What You Know

  1. Whose death had to happen before Israel turned north?

  2. What lands had God given to other peoples?

  3. How was Israel to get food from Edom?

  4. What did Moses offer Sihon first?

  5. What is the heart of the chapter, in verse 7?
