Listen to Him

Name Date

Read the Story

The priests and Levites had no share of land. God was their inheritance. The people gave them the shoulder, cheeks, and inner parts of sacrifices, plus firstfruits of grain, wine, oil, and wool.

Israel must not copy the nations. There must be no one who uses divination, tells fortunes, practices sorcery, or tries to speak with the dead. God hates these things. Israel must be blameless with God.

God promised to raise up a prophet like Moses from among their brothers. God would put His words in his mouth. If a prophet spoke in God's name and the thing did not happen, God had not sent him. The apostle Peter said Jesus is the prophet Moses promised (Acts 3:22).

Deuteronomy 18 · Grade 4

The Prophet to Come

Name Date

Read and Think

The Levites received no tribal land because Yahweh was their inheritance. The people supported them with portions of sacrifices and the first fruits of grain, wine, oil, and fleece. Serving God was their full-time work.

The nations of Canaan sought hidden knowledge through divination, fortune telling, sorcery, and calling up the dead. God called these practices abominations. Israel must be blameless and not seek guidance from anyone but God.

Instead, God would speak through prophets. At Horeb the people had begged not to hear God's voice from the fire, so God promised a prophet like Moses, from among their brothers, with God's words in his mouth. A false prophet is shown when his words do not come true. Peter and Stephen both said Jesus is the prophet like Moses (Acts 3:22; 7:37).

Deuteronomy 18 · Grade 5

Where to Find God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 18 completes the laws for Israel's leaders: judges, kings, priests, and prophets. The Levitical priests had no inheritance in the land, because Yahweh is their inheritance. Israel supported them with the shoulder, cheeks, and inner parts of sacrifices, and the first fruits of grain, new wine, oil, and fleece.

The Canaanites tried to discover the future and control unseen powers through divination, omens, sorcery, charms, mediums, and necromancy. God calls these abominations and says they are one reason He was driving out those nations. You shall be blameless with Yahweh your God. God's people do not need secret knowledge; they need God's revealed word.

At Horeb, Israel asked for a mediator, and God agreed. He promised to raise up a prophet like Moses from among their brothers, putting His words in his mouth. Whoever would not listen would answer to God. A prophet who speaks presumptuously is exposed when his word fails. The New Testament identifies Jesus as this prophet (Acts 3:22-23), and at the transfiguration the Father said, Listen to him (Mark 9:7).

Show What You Know

  1. What four kinds of leaders do chapters 16 to 18 address?

  2. What were the Canaanites trying to do with divination?

  3. What do God's people need instead of secret knowledge?

  4. How is a presumptuous prophet exposed?

  5. What did the Father say at the transfiguration?
