If a case is too hard, go to the priests and the judge. Do what they say.

One day you may want a king. God will choose him. He must not get lots of horses, wives, or gold. He must write a copy of God's law. He will read it every day. Then he will not think he is better than others.

Moses said offerings to God must have no defect. A person could only be found guilty if two or three witnesses agreed. One witness was not enough.

Cases too hard for local judges went to the priests and the judge at the place God would choose. The people must follow their verdict.

Moses knew Israel would someday want a king. The king must be an Israelite chosen by God. He must not multiply horses, wives, silver, or gold. He must write a copy of the law and read it all the days of his life, so he would fear God and not think he was above his brothers.

Deuteronomy 17 · Grade 4

A King Under God's Law

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 17 begins with worship and justice. Offerings must be without blemish, because God deserves our best. In serious cases, no one could be condemned on the word of only one witness; two or three were required. This rule protected people from false accusation, and Jesus and Paul both used it (Matthew 18:16; 2 Corinthians 13:1).

Hard cases were brought to the Levitical priests and the judge at God's chosen place. Their decision was final, for they ruled by God's law.

Most striking is the law of the king. Israel's king must be chosen by God and must not trust in horses, many wives, or wealth. He must write his own copy of the law and read it daily. In Israel, the king was not above God's law but under it. Solomon later broke these rules, and his heart turned away.

Deuteronomy 17 · Grade 5

No One Above the Law

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 17 continues the laws for judges. Sacrifices must be unblemished, because worship that offers God our leftovers dishonors Him. A capital charge required two or three witnesses, and the witnesses had to act first in carrying out the sentence. This principle, cited by Jesus (Matthew 18:16) and Paul (2 Corinthians 13:1), guarded against false accusation.

Cases too difficult for local courts, involving bloodshed, lawsuits, or assault, went to the Levitical priests and the judge at the central sanctuary. Their ruling, based on God's law, was to be followed without turning to the right hand or the left.

The law of the king is remarkable for the ancient world. Kings in other nations claimed to be the law. Israel's king must be one whom God chooses, a brother and not a foreigner. He must not multiply horses, wives, or silver and gold. He must write a copy of the law in the presence of the priests and read it all the days of his life, so that his heart would not be lifted above his brothers. Solomon's later failure in all three areas shows why the warning was needed. Jesus is the true King who perfectly kept God's law.

Show What You Know

  1. What principle did Jesus and Paul cite?

  2. How was the king different from kings in other nations?

  3. Why must the king read the law all his life?

  4. Why was the warning needed?

  5. Who is the true King who kept God's law?
