Generous Hearts

Read the Story

At the end of every seven years, Israel must cancel debts owed by their brothers. God promised to bless them so much that there would be no poor among them if they obeyed.

If a poor brother was in need, they must not harden their heart or shut their hand. They must open their hand and lend him enough. They must not think, The seventh year is near, so I will not lend. They should give gladly, and God would bless all their work.

A Hebrew servant must go free in the seventh year. He must not leave empty. They must give him gifts from their flock, threshing floor, and wine press. They must remember that they were slaves in Egypt and God redeemed them.

Deuteronomy 15 · Grade 4

The Year of Release

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 15 describes the year of release. Every seventh year, debts owed by fellow Israelites were canceled. God's goal was a community with no poor among them, if they listened to His voice.

Moses knew people's hearts. Someone might refuse to lend because the seventh year was near and the loan would be canceled. God called that a wicked thought. Instead, Israel must open their hand wide and give without a grudging heart. Since the poor will never cease out of the land, generosity would always be needed.

Hebrew servants also went free in the seventh year. Their masters had to send them off with generous gifts, as God had blessed them. The reason was memory: you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you. Grace received becomes grace given.

  1. What happened in the year of release?

  2. What did God call refusing to lend before the seventh year?

  3. Why would generosity always be needed?

  4. What does grace received become?

Deuteronomy 15 · Grade 5

Grace Received, Grace Given

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 15 establishes the seventh year as a year of release. Debts among Israelites were canceled. God promised that there would be no poor among them if they obeyed, for He would richly bless the land. The law aimed to keep poverty from becoming permanent.

Moses anticipates a selfish calculation: the seventh year is near, so lending now means losing the loan. God calls this a base thought in the heart and warns that the poor man may cry to Yahweh against you. Instead, Israel must surely open the hand and lend sufficient for his need, giving without a grieving heart. Verse 11 is realistic and moral at once: the poor will never cease out of the land, therefore open your hand.

The law of release for Hebrew servants limited service to six years and required generous gifts on release, from flock, threshing floor, and wine press. The motive was redemption: remember that you were a slave in Egypt and Yahweh redeemed you. Jesus quoted verse 11 (Mark 14:7), and Paul taught that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

  1. What did the law of release aim to do?

  2. What selfish calculation does Moses warn against?

  3. How is verse 11 both realistic and moral?
