Deuteronomy 13 · Grade 3

Love God Above All

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses warned that a prophet or a dreamer might give a sign that comes true and then say, Let's go after other gods. Israel must not listen. God would be testing them, to know whether they loved Him with all their heart and soul.

The temptation could come from a brother, a son, a daughter, a wife, or a close friend. It could even come from a whole town. Israel must never agree to serve other gods, no matter who asked.

Instead, they must walk after God, fear Him, keep His commandments, obey His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. Leading people away from God was treated as a very serious crime in Israel.

Memory Verse

“You shall walk after Yahweh your God, fear him, keep his commandments, and obey his voice. You shall serve him, and cling to him.”

Deuteronomy 13 · Grade 4

Testing True and False

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 13 gives three cases of temptation to idolatry: a prophet or dreamer with signs, a close family member or friend, and a whole town led astray by worthless men. In each case, the answer is the same: do not listen.

A sign alone does not prove a message is from God. If a prophet's sign comes true but his message leads to other gods, he is false. God allows such tests to show whether His people love Him with all their heart. Truth is measured by God's word, not by wonders.

In Israel, leading people to other gods was treated as treason against God, and it carried the death penalty. God's people were to walk after Him, fear Him, obey His voice, and cling to Him. Jesus also warned of false prophets who would show great signs (Matthew 24:24).

Deuteronomy 13 · Grade 5

The Test of Loyalty

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 13 deals with enticement to idolatry from three directions: religious authority (a prophet or dreamer with signs), close relationships (a brother, child, spouse, or friend who is as your own soul), and community pressure (a whole town led astray). In every case, Israel's loyalty to God must come first.

The chapter teaches that signs and wonders do not validate a message. A prophet whose sign comes true is still false if he says, Let's go after other gods. God permits such tests to know whether you love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul. The standard is God's revealed word.

Under the covenant, enticing others to idolatry was a capital crime, because it attacked the foundation of Israel's life with God. The penalty showed how seriously God takes leading others away from Him. The positive command remains for us: walk after God, fear Him, keep His commandments, obey His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. Jesus said that loving Him must come before even family (Matthew 10:37).
