Deuteronomy 13 · Grade 4
Testing True and False
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 13 gives three cases of temptation to idolatry: a prophet or dreamer with signs, a close family member or friend, and a whole town led astray by worthless men. In each case, the answer is the same: do not listen.
A sign alone does not prove a message is from God. If a prophet's sign comes true but his message leads to other gods, he is false. God allows such tests to show whether His people love Him with all their heart. Truth is measured by God's word, not by wonders.
In Israel, leading people to other gods was treated as treason against God, and it carried the death penalty. God's people were to walk after Him, fear Him, obey His voice, and cling to Him. Jesus also warned of false prophets who would show great signs (Matthew 24:24).
