Glad Before God

Read the Story

Moses said, In the new land, break down the places where people prayed to false gods. Do not pray to God the way they did.

God will choose one place for His name. Bring your gifts there. Eat there with your family. Be glad before God for all He gave you. Share with the Levites, who have no land.

You may eat meat at home. But do not eat the blood. Do what is right in God's eyes. Do all that God says. Do not add to it. Do not take away from it.

Deuteronomy 12 · Grade 3

The Place for His Name

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses told Israel to destroy all the places where the nations served their gods, on high mountains, on hills, and under green trees. They must not worship God in the way the nations worshiped.

Instead, they must bring their burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, and gifts to the one place God would choose to put His name. There they would eat before God and rejoice with their sons, daughters, servants, and the Levite.

If the place was far away, they could kill and eat meat at home. But they must never eat the blood, because the blood is the life. They must pour it out like water. They must do all God commands, without adding to it or taking away.

“There you shall eat before Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice in all that you put your hand to, you and your households, in which Yahweh your God has blessed you.”

Deuteronomy 12 · Grade 4

One Place, One God

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 12 begins the detailed laws of Moses' second speech. First, Israel must destroy the Canaanite places of worship, with their altars, pillars, Asherah poles, and images. They must not worship the Lord in the way the nations served their gods, who did terrible things God hated.

Second, worship would be centered at the place the Lord would choose to cause His name to dwell. Later this would be Jerusalem and the temple. Centralized worship protected Israel from mixing true worship with idolatry. At that place, worship would be a feast of joy shared with family, servants, and the Levites.

Meat could be eaten anywhere, but the blood must be poured out, for the blood is the life. The chapter ends with a warning: whatever God commands, do it. Do not add to it or take away from it.

Deuteronomy 12 · Grade 5

Worship God's Way

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 12 opens the statutes and ordinances of Moses' second speech. It begins with worship. Israel must destroy every Canaanite high place, altar, pillar, Asherah, and engraved image, and wipe out even the names of those gods. The reason is stated plainly: the nations did every abomination to their gods that the Lord hates. Israel must not ask, How did these nations serve their gods? I will do the same.

Instead of worship on every hill, Israel's sacrifices, tithes, and vows would go to the place the Lord would choose to cause His name to dwell, eventually Jerusalem. One central sanctuary guarded against idolatry and made worship a shared national feast. Moses repeats the word rejoice: Israel was to eat before God with sons, daughters, servants, and Levites, rejoicing in all their hands had done.

Ordinary meat could be eaten in any town, but blood must be poured on the ground like water, because the blood is the life. The chapter closes: whatever I command you, observe to do it; do not add to it or take away from it. Jesus later taught that true worshipers worship in spirit and truth (John 4:23), fulfilling what the temple pointed toward.

  1. What does the second speech begin with?

  2. Why must Israel not copy the nations?

  3. What did one central sanctuary guard against?

  4. Which word does Moses repeat about worship?

  5. What did Jesus later teach about worship?
