Deuteronomy 12 · Grade 4
One Place, One God
Read and Think
Deuteronomy 12 begins the detailed laws of Moses' second speech. First, Israel must destroy the Canaanite places of worship, with their altars, pillars, Asherah poles, and images. They must not worship the Lord in the way the nations served their gods, who did terrible things God hated.
Second, worship would be centered at the place the Lord would choose to cause His name to dwell. Later this would be Jerusalem and the temple. Centralized worship protected Israel from mixing true worship with idolatry. At that place, worship would be a feast of joy shared with family, servants, and the Levites.
Meat could be eaten anywhere, but the blood must be poured out, for the blood is the life. The chapter ends with a warning: whatever God commands, do it. Do not add to it or take away from it.
