Deuteronomy 10 · Grade 5

A Soft Heart and an Open Hand

Name Date

Read and Think

Deuteronomy 10 opens with a second chance. After Israel broke the covenant with the golden calf, God told Moses to cut two new tablets. God wrote the same ten words a second time, showing that His covenant purpose had not changed. The tablets went into the ark, and the tribe of Levi was set apart to carry it, stand before God, and bless in His name.

Moses then summarizes the law in one question: What does the Lord your God require of you? To fear Him, to walk in His ways, to love Him, to serve Him with all your heart and soul, and to keep His commandments for your good. God's commands are for our good, not to burden us. Israel must circumcise the heart, letting God remove stubbornness from within.

The God of gods and Lord of lords is not impressed by status. He shows no partiality and takes no bribes. He executes justice for the fatherless and widow and loves the foreigner. Because Israel had been foreigners in Egypt, they must love foreigners too. Worship of the great God must show itself in care for the weak.
