A Prayer of Confession

Name Date

Read the Story

Daniel read in the books the words that came to Jeremiah the prophet. Then he set his face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting. He prayed, Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him.

Daniel did not blame others. He said, we have sinned, and have dealt perversely. He said that mercy and forgiveness belong to God. He asked God to forgive, not because the people were good, but because God is merciful.

While Daniel was still speaking in prayer, the angel Gabriel came to him. Gabriel said he had come to give Daniel wisdom and understanding. He said, you are greatly beloved.

Lord, Hear! Lord, Forgive!

Name Date

Read and Think

In the first year of Darius, Daniel understood by the books the words that came to Jeremiah the prophet. Jeremiah had said the time in Babylon would be seventy years. So Daniel set his face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

Daniel's prayer is a model of confession. He said, we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled. He did not say they were good enough. Instead, he prayed, for we do not present our petitions before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies' sake. He ended, Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and do.

While Daniel was still praying, Gabriel came at about the time of the evening offering. Gabriel said he came to give Daniel wisdom and understanding, for you are greatly beloved. He spoke of seventy weeks and of an Anointed One. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Christ, which means Anointed One. Christians believe this points to Him.

  1. How long had Jeremiah said the time in Babylon would be?

  2. What did Daniel say about his people's sin?

Daniel 9 · Grade 5

For Your Great Mercies' Sake

Name Date

Read and Think

Daniel 9 shows Daniel reading Scripture and responding in prayer. In the first year of Darius, he understood by the books that Jeremiah had spoken of seventy years for the desolation of Jerusalem. Instead of only counting years, Daniel set his face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

Daniel's prayer begins with who God is: the great and dreadful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him. Then he confesses: we have sinned, and have dealt perversely. He never claims to deserve help, and he prays, for we do not present our petitions before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies' sake. His cry is short and urgent: Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and do.

While Daniel was still praying, Gabriel came and said, you are greatly beloved. He spoke of seventy weeks decreed to finish disobedience, to make an end of sins, and to bring in everlasting righteousness. He also spoke of an Anointed One. Christians believe this points to Jesus, and in the New Testament, John writes, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Daniel learn by reading the books?

  2. How does Daniel's prayer begin?

  3. On what did Daniel base his request?

  4. What would the seventy weeks finish?

  5. In the New Testament, what does John say God does when we confess our sins?
