Daniel 9 · Grade 5

For Your Great Mercies' Sake

Name Date

Read and Think

Daniel 9 shows Daniel reading Scripture and responding in prayer. In the first year of Darius, he understood by the books that Jeremiah had spoken of seventy years for the desolation of Jerusalem. Instead of only counting years, Daniel set his face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

Daniel's prayer begins with who God is: the great and dreadful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him. Then he confesses: we have sinned, and have dealt perversely. He never claims to deserve help, and he prays, for we do not present our petitions before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies' sake. His cry is short and urgent: Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and do.

While Daniel was still praying, Gabriel came and said, you are greatly beloved. He spoke of seventy weeks decreed to finish disobedience, to make an end of sins, and to bring in everlasting righteousness. He also spoke of an Anointed One. Christians believe this points to Jesus, and in the New Testament, John writes, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

For families: talk about these together.

  • Daniel said we have sinned, even though he was a faithful man. Why is it humble to include yourself when you confess the wrongs of your group?
  • Who besides yourself can you pray for this week?
  • What is one way you could live out this chapter this week?
