Daniel 8 · Grade 5

Broken Without Hand

Name Date

Read and Think

Daniel 8 records a vision Daniel saw in the third year of King Belshazzar, by the river Ulai. A ram with two horns pushed westward, northward, and southward, and no animals could stand before him. Then a male goat came from the west over the surface of the whole earth, and didn't touch the ground. It had a notable horn between its eyes, and it broke the ram's horns. But when the goat was strong, the great horn was broken, and four notable horns came up in its place.

A small horn grew out of one of these and became very great. It magnified itself, even to the prince of the army. It took away the continual burnt offering and cast down truth to the ground. A holy one asked how long the vision would last. The answer was, To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.

Daniel sought to understand. A man's voice called, Gabriel, make this man understand the vision. Gabriel explained only part: the ram was the kings of Media and Persia, and the rough male goat was the king of Greece. A king of fierce face would rise and stand against the prince of princes; but he will be broken without hand. Daniel fainted and was sick for some days. Then he rose up and did the king's business, though no one understood the vision.

Think About It

  1. The text says the fierce king would be broken without hand. What does it mean to trust God to deal with evil?

  2. Daniel did not understand everything, yet he kept serving. How can you trust God when you do not understand everything?

Memory Verse

“Through his policy he will cause deceit to prosper in his hand. He will magnify himself in his heart, and he will destroy many in their security. He will also stand up against the prince of princes, but he will be broken without human hands.”

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • The vision left the prophet weak and shaken. How can you care for someone who is upset?
  • How can you rely on God when things are confusing?
  • What is one way you could live out this chapter this week?
