Daniel Keeps Praying

Name Date

Read the Story

King Darius made Daniel a leader. Some men were jealous. They looked for something wrong, but Daniel was faithful. So they asked the king to make a rule. For thirty days, people could pray only to the king.

Daniel still prayed to God three times a day, as he did before. The men told the king. The king was sad, but he had to keep his rule. Daniel was put in the den of lions. In the morning the king ran to the den. Daniel said that God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths. Daniel was safe!

Memory Verse

“When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his room toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before.”

Daniel 6 · Grade 3

Faithful in Prayer

Name Date

Read the Story

King Darius put Daniel over the kingdom, because an excellent spirit was in him. Other leaders wanted to find something wrong with Daniel, but they could find no fault, because he was faithful. So they asked the king to sign a law. For thirty days, anyone who prayed to any god or man except the king would be cast into the den of lions.

Daniel knew about the law. He went into his house, where his windows were open toward Jerusalem. He kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before. The men told the king. The king tried all day to rescue him, but the law could not be changed.

Daniel was put into the den. The king said to him, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you. Early in the morning, the king hurried to the den. Daniel answered, My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths. Daniel was not hurt, because he had trusted in his God.

Memory Verse

My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me, because innocence was found in me before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.”

Daniel 6 · Grade 4

As He Did Before

Name Date

Read and Think

Darius set three presidents over his kingdom, and Daniel was one. Daniel was distinguished above the others, because an excellent spirit was in him. The other leaders sought to find occasion against Daniel, but they could find no occasion or fault, because he was faithful. They decided their only chance was the law of his God.

They asked the king to make a decree: whoever asks a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. The king signed it. When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home, where his windows were open toward Jerusalem. He kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before.

The king labored until sunset to rescue Daniel, but the law could not be changed. Daniel was cast into the den, and a stone was laid on its mouth. The king passed the night fasting. At dawn he cried, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions? Daniel answered, My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths. Darius then made a decree that all should tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

Daniel 6 · Grade 5

The Living God Delivers

Name Date

Read and Think

Daniel 6 takes place under Darius the Mede. The others sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion or fault, because he was faithful. They said, We won't find any occasion against this Daniel, unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

The officials asked Darius to sign a decree that could not be changed: for thirty days, no one could ask a petition of any god or man except the king. Daniel's response was simple. He went into his house, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, and he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before.

The king set his heart on Daniel to deliver him, but he was trapped by his own law. As Daniel was cast into the den, the king said, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you. At dawn Daniel answered, My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me. Darius wrote to all the peoples: For he is the living God, and steadfast forever. In the New Testament, Hebrews remembers those who through faith stopped the mouths of lions (Hebrews 11:33).

Show What You Know

  1. What did the officials say was the only way to accuse Daniel?

  2. What did Daniel do when the decree was signed?

  3. Why could the king not rescue Daniel?

  4. What did Darius write about God?

  5. In the New Testament, what does Hebrews say some stopped through faith?
